FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency Cancelled

NOVEMBER 4, 2008

Jail doors were open Tuesday to all jurisdictions after being closed for two days to the City of Toledo due to overcrowding conditions at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio.

The overall jail population peaked to 606 or 95 percent on Sunday and remained the same on Monday.  Toledo’s share of the population stood at 262 or 107 percent.

Doors were opened to all jurisdictions at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday when the overall population dropped to 571 or 89 percent.  Jurisdictional counts stood at 237.5 or 97 percent for Toledo; 57.5 or 93 percent for Defiance County; 39.5 or 81 percent for Fulton County; 26.5 or 74 percent for Henry County; 175.5 or 89 percent for Lucas County; and 34.5 or 69 percent for Williams County.

It is the 18th overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008.  There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
