FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

OCTOBER 15, 2008

For the past three weekends it has been a roller coaster ride for jail officials at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio who have had to close then open then close again the jail doors to the City of Toledo due to overcrowding.

Doors were closed to Toledo on Oct.8 and remained closed for six days.  Doors were reopened to Toledo on Tuesday only to be closed again today.  This morning’s count stood at 614 or 96 percent.  The City of Toledo’s population stood at 270.83 or 111 percent, 26.83 over their allocation.

Other jurisdictions include Defiance County at 61.5 or 99 percent; Fulton County at 32.83 or 67 percent; Henry County at 32.33 or 93 percent; Lucas County at 173.5 or 88 percent; and Williams County at 43 or 86 percent.

It is the 17th overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008.  There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
