OCTOBER 8, 2008
Less than 36 hours after reopening to the City of Toledo, jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were closed again due to overcrowding.
Doors were closed this morning to the City of Toledo as it’s share of population peaked to 276.5 or 113 percent, 32.5 beds over their allotment. The overall population stood at 607 or 95 percent.
Doors were closed last weekend to the City of Toledo due to overcrowding but reopened early Monday evening. The overall jail population peaked to a high of 617 or 97 percent. Jail doors were also closed one day to Henry County.
Other jurisdictional counts this morning stood at 59 or 95 percent for Defiance County; 34.5 or 70 percent for Fulton County; 33.5 or 93 percent for Henry County; 170.5 or 87 percent for Lucas County; and 33 or 66 percent for Williams County.
It is the 16th overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008. There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.
CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606. In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
