FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

OCTOBER 6, 2008

For a third weekend in a row, jail doors were closed at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio due to overcrowding.

Doors were closed Saturday to the City of Toledo due to overcrowding.  The overall population stood at 617 or 97 percent.  Toledo’s share of the population stood at 276 or 113 percent.

Doors remained closed Sunday to the City of Toledo as well as to Henry County.  The overall population stood at 615 or 96 percent.  Toledo’s share of the population stood at 261.3 or 107 percent while Henry County stood at 37 or 102 percent.

Doors were re-opened to Henry County today but remained closed to the City of Toledo.  This morning’s overall population stood at 602 or 94 percent.  Toledo’s share of the population stood at 281.5 or 110 percent.  Other jurisdictional counts stood at 59.5 or 96 percent for Defiance County; 32.5 or 66 percent for Fulton County; 36 or 100 percent for Henry County; 168.5 or 86 percent for Lucas County; and 38 or 76 percent for Williams County.

The overcrowding emergency was declared by Executive Director Jim Dennis.  It is the 15th overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008.  There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
