Overcrowding Emergency - Jail Doors Reopen to Two Jurisdictions

OCTOBER 1, 2007

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were reopened to two of the three jurisdictions after an overcrowding emergency had been declared over the weekend.

Doors were closed on Saturday to the City of Toledo and Fulton County.  The City of Toledo’s population peaked to 258.5 or 106 percent. Fulton County’s population reached 50.83 or 102 percent.  Defiance County was added to the list Monday morning when its population climbed to 62.3 or 100.4 percent.

As of mid Monday afternoon, doors were reopened to Fulton and Defiance counties.  Fulton County’s population stood at 47.8 while Defiance County at 61.3.

It is the 20th overcrowding emergency to be declared at CCNO in 2007.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
