FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

OCTOBER 1, 2007

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio are closed to three jurisdictions as of Monday morning due to overcrowding.

Doors were closed on Saturday to the City of Toledo and Fulton County.  The City of Toledo’s population peaked to 258.5 or 106 percent. Fulton County’s population reached 50.83 or 102 percent.

This morning, Defiance County was added to the list when its population climbed to 62.3 or 100.4 percent.  Fulton County remains at 102 percent; City of Toledo at 103 percent; Henry County at 85 percent; Lucas County at 97 percent and Williams County at 79 percent.  The total population stood at 628 or 98 percent.

Early releases are being requested from jurisdictions that are 90 percent over their bed allotments.

It is the 20th overcrowding emergency to be declared at CCNO in 2007.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
