SEPTEMBER 30, 2008
Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were opened to all jurisdictions Monday night after being closed to the City of Toledo over the weekend.
By 7 p.m. Monday, the jail population was reduced to 574. The population had peaked to 606 or 95 percent on Saturday and jail doors were closed to the City of Toledo as its count stood at 275 or 113 percent. Doors remained closed to Toledo Monday morning as the population dropped to 593 or 93 percent and Toledo’s count stood at 267.5 or 110 percent.
The overcrowding emergency was declared by Executive Director Jim Dennis. It is the 14th overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008. There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.
CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606. In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
