FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency Cancelled

SEPTEMBER 24, 2008

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were reopened this morning after being closed for four days to the City of Toledo due to overcrowding.

CCNO’s population had peaked to 616 or 96.5 percent on Saturday with doors closed to the City of Toledo and Defiance County.  Doors were reopened to Defiance County on Monday as that jurisdiction was able to reduce its population.  Doors remained closed to the City of Toledo with its population at 281.5 or 115 percent.

As of this morning, the overall population stood at 575.

It is the 13th overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008.  There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
