FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

AUGUST 13, 2007

For a second weekend in a row, jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were closed to the City of Toledo due to overcrowding conditions.

Doors were closed Saturday to the City of Toledo when its population figures peaked to 267.5 or 109 percent, 23.5 over.  The total population reached 618 or 96 percent.

Jail doors remain closed this morning to the City of Toledo with its count at 256 or 105 percent.  The total population stood at 602 or 94 percent.  Other jurisdictional counts stood at 51 or 82 percent for Defiance County; 45 or 90 percent for Fulton County; 31 or 82 percent for Henry County; 173 or 87 percent for Lucas County; and 46 or 92 percent for Williams County.

It was the 17th overcrowding emergency to be declared at CCNO in 2007.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
