FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

JULY 21, 2008

In less than a week, jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were closed again to the City of Toledo due to overcrowding.

Doors were closed Saturday to the City of Toledo as its population stood at 276.67 or 113 percent of capacity.  They were 32.67 beds over their allocation.  Jail doors had been closed Wednesday to the City of Toledo when its population reached 275.5 or 113 percent of capacity, 31.5 beds over their allocation.  Doors were reopened on Thursday only to be closed again on Saturday.

The overall population at CCNO stood at 607 or 95 percent on Saturday, dropped to 601 or 94 percent on Sunday and stood at 593 or 93 percent on Monday.

Toledo still remained over its allotment as of Monday at 270.3 or 111 percent, 26.33 over.  Other jurisdictions stood at 52 or 84 percent for Defiance County; 41.33 or 84 percent for Fulton County; 25.5 or 71 percent for Henry County; 163.83 or 83 percent for Lucas County; and 40 or 80 percent for Williams County.

It is the eighth overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008.  There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
