The Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio recently assisted with a research project being conducted by the jail division of the Bureau of Adult Detention, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, in updating its inspection standards.
State officials and researchers visited CCNO on Tuesday, June 8, to interview offenders and staff as part of the jail standards evaluation study in Ohio. Some 130 CCNO inmates were asked to complete an eight-page, multiple-choice confidential survey. In addition, several CCNO jail staff were interviewed about various operations in the jail to include booking procedures, facility operations, general housing, medical and mental health services, staffing levels, staff training requirements as well as programs, treatment and services provided to offenders.
CCNO was one of only 12 full-service jails selected to participate in the project. The purpose of the study is to allow state officials to revise jail standards. The new standards will be evidence-based and result in improved compliance statewide.
Jim Dennis, CCNO Executive Director, has been serving on the Ohio Jail Advisory Board that requested the revision in state standards. Mr. Dennis said, “This process of using inmate surveys, staff interviews and staff questionnaires gives validity to the process. This is the first state that has gone to this extent to revise or establish standards and ‘best practices.’ CCNO was pleased to be selected. The inmates willingly participated. The surveyors felt the inmate input was genuine and well intentioned. The inmate involvement is important in my opinion. The inmates are why we are here and they have to live here. We need to prevent escapes, protect staff and inmates while also meeting constitutional requirements. The past 30 years have gotten more complex. I am looking forward to the project recommendations.”
