FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

JUNE 4, 2007

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio had been closed over the weekend but were reopened early Monday evening based on projected releases.

Jail doors were closed on Saturday to the City of Toledo when its share of the population climbed to 261.3 or 107 percent.

Defiance County was added to the overcrowding emergency on Saturday evening when it exceeded its bed allocation numbers but figures were quickly reduced.

As of Monday morning, the overall population stood at 630 or 98 percent.  Jail doors still remained closed to the City of Toledo with its population at 256.8 or 105 percent.

By 6 p.m. Monday, 21 releases were anticipated to include 10 from the City of Toledo.  As a result, the population count stood at 608 or 94.7 percent.

This was the 11th overcrowding emergency to be declared at CCNO in 2007.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
