FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

MAY 7, 2007

Jail doors had been closed to Defiance County and the City of Toledo on Saturday when their population figures exceeded allotted beds.  Defiance County’s population stood at 62.5 or 100.8 percent while the City of Toledo had 247.8 or 101.5 percent.  The population overall stood at 615 or 95.7 percent.

Both jurisdictions were able to reduce their population numbers this morning with the overall population at 595 or 93 percent.  Defiance County stood at 60 or 97 percent; Fulton County at 43.8 or 88 percent; Henry County at 30 or 79 percent; Lucas County at 169.8 or 86 percent; City of Toledo at 243.3 or 99.7 percent; and Williams County at 48 or 96 percent.

This was the tenth overcrowding emergency to be declared at CCNO in 2007.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status

when the inmate population reaches 95 percent.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
