FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

APRIL 30, 2007

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were closed to two jurisdictions over the weekend.

Jail doors were closed Saturday to the City of Toledo and Defiance County when CCNO’s total population stood at 610 or 95 percent.

The City of Toledo’s population count climbed to 252.8 or 104 percent.  Defiance County’s population count was 63 or 102 percent.

The overcrowding emergency was cancelled to Defiance County today when its population dropped to 61 or 98 percent Monday morning.  The entire facility had a population of 613 or 96 percent.

The City of Toledo must drop their population to or below their bed allocation or CCNO’s overall population must drop to 578 or 90 percent before the jail doors are opened.

There have now been nine overcrowding emergencies declared in 2007.  There were 13 overcrowding emergencies declared in 2006 with the next highest being six in 2004.

When CCNO reaches 95 percent or 610 for one day, it results in closing the doors to those jurisdictions exceeding their allocations.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
