FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

JANUARY 29, 2007

For a fourth weekend in a row, jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were closed to the City of Toledo.

Jail doors were closed Saturday to the City of Toledo when the population count climbed to 616 or 96 percent.  Toledo had 249 or 102 percent.

This morning’s population count stood at 610.  Toledo’s population stood at 245.5 or 101 percent.

Other jurisdiction counts this morning stood at 56.5 or 91 percent for Defiance County; 48 or 96 percent for Fulton County; 30 or 79 percent for Henry County; 189 or 95 percent for Lucas County; and 41 or 82 percent for Williams County.

There have now been four overcrowding emergencies declared in 2007.  There were 13 overcrowded emergencies declared in 2006 with the next highest being six in 2004.

When CCNO reaches 95 percent or 610 for one day, it results in closing the doors to those jurisdictions exceeding their allocations.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
