FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency Cancellation

JANUARY 22, 2007

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were open early Monday morning to all jurisdictions after being closed to two jurisdictions over the weekend.

Jail doors had been closed all weekend to the City of Toledo when its population peaked to 275.5 or 113 percent.  Doors were also closed for about half a day on Friday to Defiance County when its population peaked to 64.5 or 104 percent.

This morning’s population stood at 584 or 91 percent.  Counts stood at 56.5 or 91 percent for Defiance County; 44 or 88 percent for Fulton County; 27.5 or 72 percent for Henry County; 175 or 88 percent for Lucas County; 248 or 101 percent for the City of Toledo with more releases anticipated; and 33 or 66 percent for Williams County.

It was the third weekend in a row in 2007 for doors to be closed to the City of Toledo.  It was the first time for Defiance County.  There have been three overcrowding emergencies declared in 2007.  There were 13 overcrowding emergencies declared in 2006 with the next highest being six in 2004.

When CCNO reaches 95 percent or 610 for one day, it results in closing the doors to those jurisdictions exceeding their allocations.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
