FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

JANUARY 17, 2007

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were closed over the weekend to the City of Toledo but reopened early Tuesday morning.

Jail doors had been closed on Friday, January 12 to the City of Toledo when its population count climbed to 266 or 109 percent.  The total count at CCNO on Saturday was 615 or 96 percent.  Tuesday's population stood at 572.

It was the second weekend in a row for doors to be closed to the City of Toledo.  It also was the second time in 2007 that jail doors had been closed due to peak population numbers.  There were 13 times that overcrowding emergencies were declared in 2006.

When CCNO reaches 95 percent or 610 for one day, it results in closing the doors to those jurisdictions exceeding their allocations.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
