FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

JANUARY 8, 2007

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were closed over the weekend to the City of Toledo but reopened early Monday morning.

Jail doors had been closed on Saturday to the City of Toledo when its population count climbed to 263.5 or 108 percent of its allocation.  The total count at CCNO on Saturday was 612 or 95 percent.  Monday’s population totaled 573.

It was the first time in 2007 that jail doors had been closed due to peak population numbers.  There were 13 times that overcrowding emergencies were declared at CCNO in 2006.

When CCNO reaches 95 percent or 610 for one day, it results in closing the doors to those jurisdictions exceeding their allocations.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
